BROWNSBURG, Ind. — The developmental Atlantic Racing Series has been sold to Atlanta businessman Ben Johnston by the former owners of the defunct Champ Car World Series.
The 35-year-old Atlantic Championship is the longest-running open-wheel developmental series in North America. Johnston says it will continue operating out of its Brownsburg headquarters and plans 10 to 12 races in 2009.
Terms of the purchase from Kevin Kalkhoven and Gerald Forsythe were not disclosed in Friday’s announcement. The Atlantic series is the top rung of Mazda’s developmental program.
The former Champ Car series filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March, two weeks after agreeing to a merger with the Indy Racing League.
