CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An attorney for Jeremy Mayfield says the driver will not travel to Chicago for this weekend’s NASCAR race.
John Buric says Mayfield does not have the necessary sponsorship for his car and no owner is willing to give him a ride for Saturday night’s race at Chicagoland Speedway.
Buric says Mayfield instead will stay in North Carolina to help his lawyers respond to NASCAR’s appeal.
Last week a federal judge issued an injunction that cleared Mayfield to compete. On Wednesday, NASCAR asked the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn U.S. District Court Judge Graham Mullen’s decision.
Mayfield was suspended May 9 for failing a random drug test eight days earlier, and NASCAR has said he tested positive for methamphetamine.
