After a few highly enjoyed days of vacation, I’m back on the prep sports beat.
Tonight I’ll be at Kamiak High School in Mukilteo, where the Knights will play host to the Stanwood Spartans in a non-division boys basketball game. I hope snow and potentially icy conditions don’t force a postponement.
It should be a competitive battle. I haven’t seen either team this season but they appear to be two of the better defensive squads in the Western Conference. Kamiak (3-3 overall) has allowed an average of 50.7 points per game, while Stanwood (4-3) has given up just 49.1 per outing.
Both teams are on a decent roll. They’ve combined to win six of their past eight games.
What am I looking forward to? I’m interested in seeing Kamiak’s Justin Glenn. I know him as a standout football player (the defensive back/running back verbally committed to play for Tyrone Willingham at the University of Washington) but I’ve never watched Glenn play hoops.
And I want to see how talented Stanwood sophomore Zack Johnson (10.3 points per game) fares in the paint against Kamiak posts Skylar Stormo (6-foot-4; 12.8 ppg) and Jerad Parcells (6-7).
Tomorrow I’m scheduled to cover what could be a great girls basketball game: 5-1 Jackson versus 6-1 Roosevelt in Mill Creek. It features two of the state’s best Class 4A teams. Either squad could end up hoisting a prestigious trophy in a few months at the state tournament in Tacoma.
