LAKE STEVENS — Shoot, Anne, shoot!
That’s what Snohomish girls basketball coach Ken Roberts keeps telling his versatile forward, Anne Bailey. On Wednesday night, she finally did in the Panthers’ 45-39 Western Conference North Division victory over Lake Stevens in the Vikings’ gym.
"She’s a very unselfish player," Roberts said. "Sometimes I wish she would be a little more selfish."
In addition to her typical night of nice passes to teammates, the Gonzaga-bound Bailey poured in a career-high 28 points while pulling down 12 rebounds.
Bailey proved to be the difference late in the game. The Vikings tied the score at 28 when point guard Gina Carbonatto — who along with Maisie Todd scored 12 points — put back a Lake Stevens miss with 1:30 remaining in the third period.
The game belonged to Bailey after that.
She scored the game’s next five points, and contributed 13 of Snohomish’s final 18 points to ensure a Panthers (1-0 in conference, 3-0 overall) a victory in their first conference game of the season.
"My whole life people have been telling me to shoot," said Bailey, who has played all five positions during her career. "I was able to get some rebounds and put them back in. It feels good to start things off with a win."
Bailey gave Snohomish the lead for good with a turn-around jump shot with 1:10 remaining in the third period. She added a free throw with 35 seconds left in the period, and two more 14 seconds into the fourth period. Beth Krause hit a 3-point goal, then Bailey made a layup with 6:34 left.
By then, it was 38-28 Snohomish, and a Viking comeback seemed unlikely. Stacey Cochrun hit a free throw, but Bailey was there again, this time with an offensive rebound and layup for a 40-29 advantage with 5:10 remaining.
"She’s really a fine player," said Lake Stevens coach Steve Berg. "I’m not disappointed with how we played. Certainly, I wanted to win the basketball game, but I’m not disappointed with how we played."
Roberts said the unsung hero for Snohomish was Krause, who helped bail the Panthers out of a 19-11 hole in the second period. Though the reserve guard scored just four points, good things seemed to happen when the 5-foot-7 defensive specialist was on the floor. She also came into the game early in Snohomish’s decisive 13-1 run spanning the third and fourth periods.
"She did a great job for us on defense," Roberts said.
Lake Stevens (0-2, 2-3) committed five turnovers during the 13-1 run, and the shots that fell in the first half rolled out of the hoop late in the game.
Bailey and post Hali Thompson (five points, eight rebounds) collected Lake Stevens misses, along with several of Snohomish’s to give the Panthers second chances.
"They were able to get the ball into (Bailey) in the second half," Berg said. "Her size and strength — their size and strength — was a little more than we could handle."
Snohomish led by two with two minutes remaining in the first quarter, but Carbonatto and Todd led the Vikings on a 10-0 run. Carbonatto, a point guard, contributed three points and several nifty passes during the run to help Lake Stevens to a 19-11 advantage with 6:06 remaining in the half.
Bailey, however, put the Panthers right back in the game. She contributed seven points as Snohomish closed the half by outscoring the Vikings 13-3 to tie the halftime score at 22.
Bailey scored 11 points and pulled down six rebounds in the first half. Todd led Lake Stevens in the first half with nine points. Carbonatto had eight.
