Ballard, Blanchet take titles

LAKEWOOD -Ballard’s Zach Gussin and Bishop Blanchet’s Casey Conroy led their respective cross country teams to titles at the Hole in the Wall Invitational on Saturday at Lakewood High School.

Gussin won the boys race in a time of 16 minutes, 25 seconds, edging Seattle Prep’s Mike Lovejoy by a single second. Everett’s Matt Kaftanski finished third in the 5,000-meter race in 16:39. Ballard finished with a team score of 59 followed by Everett (72) and Seattle Prep (81).

In the girls race, Conroy won with a time of 20:10. Bellevue Christian’s Liz Smit was second and Lake Stevens’ Bailey Granstrom was third, both crossing in 20:14. Bishop Blanchet finished with a team score of 55 to outpace Ballard (108) and Lake Stevens (117).

Kodiak Invitational: Mountlake Terrace finished second in the boys competition behind the fourth-place finish of James Hudson, who finished with a time of 16 minutes, 37 seconds. In the girls meet, Estelle Kills Right paced Mountlake Terrace to a fourth-place finish, taking seventh in 20:18.

Volleyball

Crossover Classic At Spokane, Marysville-Pilchuck went 5-2 and finished fourth out of 54 teams. The Tomahawks went 3-0 in pool play. Then in knockout play M-P beat Shadle Park 15-10, 15-13, beat Pullman 15-13, 15-12, lost to Eisenhower 17-15, 15-10 and lost to Mead 15-7, 15-6. Micaela Parker had 51 kills and nine aces, Korissa Clevish had 94 assists and Natanya Parsons had 53 digs for the Tomahawks.

Mount Baker Tournament: At Deming, Granite Falls went 2-3 and finished sixth out of eight teams. The Tigers finished 1-2 in pool play, then in elimination play Granite Falls beat Steilacoom 30-28, 29-27 before losing to Chief Sealth 14-25, 25-22, 15-11. Casey Jensen had 28 kills, 11 blocks and was 44-for-46 serving to lead the Tigers. Nichole Megard added 19 kills and 17 blocks and Zuzanna Drebert dished out 59 assists.
