Wolf agrees to deal with Dodgers
LOS ANGELES — Randy Wolf, who went 9-6 in 2007 for Los Angeles before shoulder trouble sidelined him in midseason, agreed to a one-year, $5 million deal with the Dodgers. The 32-year-old Wolf joins a mostly youthful starting group that lost Derek Lowe to Atlanta and Brad Penny to Boston. Chad Billingsley, Clayton Kershaw and Hiroki Kuroda are likely to fill starting slots, with the last spot up for grabs.
Gordon goes to Diamondbacks
PHOENIX — Relief pitcher Tom Gordon agreed to a $500,000, one-year contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 41-year-old right-hander, a member of last season’s World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies, can make an additional $2.5 million in bonuses based on days on the active roster. Gordon was 5-4 with two saves and a 5.16 ERA last year. He did not allow a run in 24 of 34 appearances, but his season ended in July due to right elbow inflammation.
LHP Feliciano and Mets settle
NEW YORK — Reliever Pedro Feliciano and the New York Mets agreed to a one-year contract worth $1,612,500 and avoided salary arbitration. The 32-year-old left-hander was 3-4 with a 4.05 ERA and two saves in 86 relief appearances last season. After earning $1.04 million last year, he had asked $1.95 million in arbitration and had been offered $1.35 million.
Jennings gets minor league deal
ARLINGTON, Texas — Right-hander Jason Jennings and the Texas Rangers agreed to a minor league contract that could lead to a major league deal potentially worth up to $2.25 million. Jennings started just six games for the Rangers last year before season-ending surgery in May to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right elbow. Similar surgery ended his 2007 season with the Houston Astros in August.
Seitzer returns to Royals
SURPRISE, Ariz. — Former All-Star third baseman Kevin Seitzer is returning to the Kansas City Royals as their hitting coach. Seitzer replaces Mike Barnett, who was fired after last season when the Royals ranked near the bottom of the American League in on-base percentage and runs scored.
Varitek, Red Sox finalize deal
BOSTON — Jason Varitek and the Boston Red Sox have finalized a $5 million, one-year contract. Varitek hit .220 with 13 homers and 43 RBI last year, then became a free agent after completing a $40 million, four-year contract with Boston.
Takahashi officially a Blue Jay
TORONTO — Left-hander Ken Takahashi finalized a minor league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays and was invited to major league spring training camp. The 39-year-old has spent his entire 14-year career in Japan, and was 8-5 with a 3.50 ERA in 21 games for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp last season.
