RED SOX: Boston designated hitter David Ortiz left Saturday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles in the ninth inning after sustaining a left wrist sprain while fouling off a pitch. X-rays were negative and Ortiz is listed as day to day, though Ortiz said after Boston’s 6-3 victory that he doubted he would play today. “I don’t think so. It’s sore,” Ortiz said.
Boston activated right-hander Clay Buchholz from the 15-day disabled list on Saturday and optioned him to Class AAA Pawtucket, where he had been on a rehabilitation assignment.
TIGERS: Dontrelle Willis never broached the topic of returning to the starting rotation with manager Jim Leyland, content just to be back with the Detroit Tigers after a rehab stint in the minors. But Willis will be back in a modified starting role on Tuesday when the Tigers play in Willis’ hometown of Oakland, Calif., against the Athletics. Willis, who has pitched only once in relief since coming off the disabled list May 21, will start against the A’s but will be replaced no matter what after four or five innings by fellow Tigers starter Armando Galarraga.
ROYALS: Kansas City recalled right-hander Kyle Davies Class AAA Omaha on Saturday to start against the Cleveland Indians.
RANGERS: Right-hander Jason Jennings underwent season-ending elbow surgery for the second straight year. Team physician Keith Meister performed the surgery Friday to repair Jennings’ right flexor tendon, manager Ron Washington said. The 2002 National League Rookie of the Year had the same surgery last August while he was with the Houston Astros. Jennings, signed to a $4 million, one-year deal in the offseason, began the season in the starting rotation. He went 0-5 with a 8.56 ERA in six starts before going on the disabled list May 1 with a strained right elbow.
TWINS: Nick Punto was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list and in the lineup for the Minnesota Twins at shortstop.Punto has been out since May 8 because of a strained left hamstring. Infielder Howie Clark, who played in four games and had two hits and an RBI in eight at-bats, was designated for assignment to make room.
UMPIRE: First base umpire Brian O’Nora limped off the field in the second inning of Saturday’s Rockies-Cubs with an injury to the back of his left leg. O’Nora was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago for an MRI to determine the extent of the injury and is not expected to work today’s series finale.
PADRES: San Diego left-hander Shawn Estes broke the thumb on his throwing hand when he fell on the tunnel stairs between the team’s clubhouse and dugout Friday night. The Padres placed the pitcher on the 15-day disabled list Saturday after X-rays late Friday revealed the broken bone, a discouraging development for a player who was on his way back. The 35-year-old Estes was scheduled to start Monday back home at Petco Park in the series opener against the Chicago Cubs. Estes, who didn’t pitch in the majors last year while recovering from Tommy John surgery, is scheduled to be examined by a hand specialist Monday in San Diego to determine whether he might need surgery to have a pin inserted into the thumb or if it can heal on its own.
