I just received an e-mail from Nalin Sood, president of the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association.
According to Sood, basketball coaches across the state got together and developed several options for the new-look regional and state basketball tournaments approved last month by the WIAA. Frustrated about not being asked for input before the WIAA Executive Board’s decision on April 23, WIBCA coaches plan to vote on their preferred format option later this week and hopefully influence the WIAA, which is scheduled to meet with district athletic directors on June 1 and come up with specific options for the new state tournaments.
Sood sent me a .pdf and Power Point presentation that outlines the different options WIBCA members will vote on. I will take a closer look and post some thoughts later this morning or this afternoon. In the meantime, here is the text of Sood’s e-mail:
Dear Members of the Washington Media:
In response to the recent decision made by the WIAA Executive Board changing the format of the state tournaments for boy’s and girl’s basketball teams in the state of Washington, the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association (WIBCA) has developed a Regionals and State Championship Format Proposal For 2010-12 with several options that we as a membership body will be voting on this week to determine which option we hope that the WIAA will strongly consider implementing for the six state basketball tournaments in the upcoming years. We have spent many hours preparing this proposal and have conducted membership opinion and idea sharing, reviews, as well as conducted a state-wide meeting for members to review this proposal and
subsequent option before it was sent out for members to vote on. We send this to you so you will see and fully understand how serious we are taking this dramatic change and our goal of developing a plan that is best for all parties involved with high school basketball in the state of Washington. While we are not happy with how this decision came down from the WIAA by any means, we are moving forth in trying to do our part of this process.
We will have our voting completed by the end of this week. Thank you for your time and support.
