SASKATOON, Saskatchewan — It was a happy homecoming for the Everett Silvertips on Saturday night.
Everett’s large contingent of players with ties to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, all got involved as the Tips knocked off the Saskatoon Blades 6-2.
Everett has three players who hail from Saskatoon (forwards Kohl Bauml, Carson Stadnyk and Dawson Leedahl) as well as two who played for the Blades last season (Nikita Scherbak and Graham Millar). All five hit the scoresheet Saturday, and all five did so during the first five minutes of the second period when the Tips broke the game open. Bauml finished with two goals, Scherbak had two assists, Millar and Leedahl scored goals, and Stadnyk had an assist.
Brayden Low and Patrick Bajkov also found the net for Everett (23-11-3-1), which is off to a 2-0 start in its six-game swing through the WHL’s East Division. Carter Hart, making his second straight start in goal, earned the win with 26 saves.
Sam McKechnie and Jordan Thomson scored for Saskatoon (9-28-2-1). Nik Amundrud, a former Silvertip, allowed five goals on 20 shots before being pulled midway through the second period. Trevor Martin stopped 26 of 27 in relief.
The score was tied 1-1 going into the second period when the Tips blew the game wide open.
Everett began the period on the power play, and the Tips were handed a five-on-three when the Blades took another penalty just four seconds into the period. Everett converted both ends of the penalty. Bauml scored his second goal of the game at 0:28 on the five-on-three when he converted a back-door feed from Scherbak. Then on the five-on-four Millar put home a rebound to make it 3-1.
The Tips then scored twice more before the midpoint of the second period arrived. Leedahl put a shot through traffic and past Amundrud at 4:39, just moments after Amundrud had robbed Stadnyk. Then Low forced a puck in from close range at 9:16 to make it 5-1. Low’s goal sent Amundrud to bench in favor of Martin.
Saskatoon gave itself a glimmer of hope when Thomson scored on the power play at 10:48 of the third period to get the Blades back within three. But Bajkov scored on a one-timer on the power play at 16:50 to provide the Tips a final bit of insurance.
