Bearcats wrap up playoff berth with 5-0 victory

OAK HARBOR — By shutting out Oak Harbor on Tuesday night, the young Monroe girls soccer team accomplished more than a win.

The Bearcats also clinched a spot in the upcoming District 1 playoffs.

Led by Jenna Herman’s two goals and one assist, and another two goals from Stephanie Ryder, Monroe blanked Oak Harbor 5-0.

It’s been two years since Monroe has been to the playoffs and head coach Kathleen Potthast believes the team is heading to the postseason on a good note. Since the first of October, the Bearcats are 4-1-1.

“We’re going to take one game at a time,” said Potthast. “We’ve had a strong second half of the season and we’re playing good right now.”

At Memorial Stadium

Goals—Monroe: Ryder 2, Herman 2, Sowler. Assists—Monroe: Herman, Sweet, Hawkins, Chesemore. Goalkeepers—Monroe: Dani Philippart, Dara Smith. Oak Harbor: Roberts. Records—Monroe 7-6-2. Oak Harbor 2-12-1.

Snohomish 3, Lake Stevens 2: At Snohomish, Juliet Desmarais and Stephanie Leon scored within minutes of each other and Brooke Gilbert scored the game-winner to lift Snohomish to the Wesco North victory. Lake Stevens’ Taryn Wright opened the scoring in the fifth minute but Desmarais scored the tying goal in the 10th and Leon put the Panthers ahead in the 14th. Gilbert then found the net in the 43nd minute to give Snohomish a two-goal margin.

At Veterans Memorial Stadium

Goals—Lake Stevens: Wright, Isaman. Snohomish: Desmarais, Leon, Gilbert. Assists—Lake Stevens: Isaman, Tate. Snohomish: Gilbert 2, Bjornethun. Goalkeepers—Lake Stevens: Three Stars, McKenzie. Snohomish: Goverde. Records—Snohomish 14-0-1 in league and overall. Lake Stevens 6-5-4.

Marysville-Pilchuck 3, Arlington 1: Juliana Albano, assisted by Rachel Hamelin, scored the first goal for Marysville-Pilchuck en route to a win over Arlington in the Wesco North game. Kristen Allen recorded the only goal for the Eagles.

At Arlington

Goals—Marysville-Pilchuck: Albano, Wood, Runyan. Arlington: Allen. Assists—Marysville-Pilchuck: Hamelin, Lauer. Goalkeepers—Marysville-Pilchuck: Peterson. Arlington: Wilson. Records—Marysville-Pilchuck: 10-3-2 overall. Arlington: 2-11-2.

Everett 1, Stanwood 0: At Everett, sophomore Kylie Beeson scored in the second minute of the second half to lift Everett to the Wesco North victory. Beeson’s goal came off an assist from Annie Sittauer, while Seagulls goalkeeper Emily Nesting posted the shutout. The victory clinched the No. 1 Wesco 3A berth for the upcoming Northwest District playoffs.

At Lincoln Field

Goals—Everett: Beeson. Assists—Sittauer. Goalkeepers—Everett: Nesting. Stanwood—Jackson. Records: Everett 11-4 in league, 11-4 overall. Stanwood 5-7-4, 5-7-4.

Jackson 2, Shorewood 1: At Everett, Sara O’Neal’s goal in the 64th minute proved to be the difference as Wesco South champion Jackson defeated Shorewood.

At Everett Memorial Stadium

Goals—Shorewood: Amor. Jackson: Kingma, O’Neal. Assists—Jackson: Ellis. Goalkeepers—Shorewood: Butterfield. Jackson: Wilson and Beer. Records—Shorewood 9-5-1 in league and overall. Jackson 14-0-1.

Kamiak 4, Meadowdale 1: At Edmonds, Kelli Stewart recorded a hat trick — scoring three goals — to lift Kamiak over Meadowdale for the Wesco South victory. Stewart found the net for unassisted goals in the 10th and 28th minutes and added a third score in the 51st minute with an assist from Morgan Reitan.

At Edmonds District Stadium

Goals—Kamiak: Stewart 3, Munoz. Meadowdale: Eberth. Assists—Kamiak: Beckelhymer, Reitan. Meadowdale: not reported. Goalkeepers—Kamiak: Stupey, Larson. Meadowdale: not reported. Records—Kamiak 11-3-1 in league and overall. Meadowdale 7-7-1.

Shorecrest 4, Lynnwood 1: Kelsey Paden scored twice in Shorecrest’s Wesco South victory over Lynnwood. Rochelle Hann scored the lone goal for the Royals, which temporarily tied the game at 1-1. The Scots scored three more goals to secure the win after halftime.

At Shoreline Stadium

Goals—Shorecrest: Paden 2, Gulian, McCorkell. Lynnwood—Hann. Assists—Shorecrest: McCorkell, Adams. Goalkeepers—Shorecrest: Towles. Lynnwood: Hernandez. Records—Shorecrest 7-3-4 overall. Lynnwood 1-14-1.

Mountlake Terrace 8, Mariner 0: At Everett, Kelly Weikart scored in the sixth minute with an assist from Laurelle LaCasse to give Mountlake Terrace all the offense it would need in the Wesco South contest. LaCasse added two goals and another assist for the Hawks and keeper Caitlin Hovick recorded her first shutout of the season.

At Mariner H.S.

Goals—Mountlake Terrace: LaCasse 2, Runkel 2, Bradlee, Weikart, McLauchlan, Berry. Assists—Mountlake Terrace: LaCasse 2, Pingul, Bradlee, Raunio, Hollenbeck. Goalkeepers—Mountlake Terrace: Hovick. Mariner: not reported. Records—Mountlake Terrace 5-9-1 in league and overall. Mariner 0-13-1.

Archbishop Murphy 6, South Whidbey 0: At Langley, Caroline Brawner’s unassisted goal in the 10th minute was all Archbishop Murphy needed in the Cascade Conference match. Brawner also recorded two assists for the Wildcats and keepers Sarah Carratt and Julie Connelly combined on the shutout.

At South Whidbey H.S.

Lakewood 6, Coupeville 1: At Marysville, Coupeville jumped out to an early lead, but Anna Work scored the tying goal in the 31st minute and Hayley Bustad found the net just after the intermission to put Lakewood ahead for good in the Cascade Conference contest.

North Sound Christian 2, Lopez 1: At Mountlake Terrace, North Sound Christian scored two first-half goals and then held on through a scoreless second half to defeat Lopez in the Northwest 1B League game. Daron Otis and Jin Tae Kim had goals for North Sound Christian, with Jeremy Waller notching an assist.
