Washington Stealth defenseman Matt Beers was selected first overall by the Burnaby Lakers in Tuesday’s Western Lacrosse Association draft.
Beers, who helped guide the Stealth to the NLL Champion’s Cup as a rookie defenseman in 2010, led the Coquitlam Adanacs to the Canadian box lacrosse Junior ‘A’ Minto Cup championship during the summer.
The 6-foot-3, 205-pound 21-year-old, has accumulated 14 penalty minutes and tallied 17 loose balls and five forced turnovers in five games this season for the Stealth (3-3 overall).
Last year during the franchise’s championship season, the Coquitlam, B.C., native had 90 loose balls in 15 games, in addition to 10 points (two goals, eight assists).
