Bellevue blitzes Lynden for 3A title

Associated Press

TACOMA – The bad news for Lynden was that Bellevue’s Yohahns Carr scored on a 75-yard run on the first play from scrimmage at Friday night’s state Class 3A championship game.

The worst news for the Lions, however, was that the Wolverines were just getting warmed up.

Bellevue, led by Gavin Smith’s 221 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, rushed for a 3A title game record 465 yards in a 42-15 victory over Lynden at the Tacoma Dome.

It was the Wolverines’ second state crown. Bellevue won the 4A title in 1983.

While Bellevue wound up its season at 13-0, Lynden finished with a 10-3 record.

Smith had TD runs of 8, 43 and 96 yards. His 96-yarder in the first quarter was the second longest in state championship history in any classification. It was second only to Prescott’s Sam Erwin’s 99-yard run Friday in the B-8 final.

Smith’s 221 yards on 12 carries broke the 3A finals mark of 209 set by Burlington’s Jay Breckenridge in 1977 against Peninsula.

Bellevue’s 465 rushing yards bettered the 1977 Burlington team mark of 440 in the title game.

Carr rushed for 142 yards on eight carries and scored twice.

Lynden managed just 84 yards of total offense and three first downs in the first half. The Lions finished with 255 yards and scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter against Bellevue’s reserves.

Inchelium 36, Prescott 29: At Tacoma, senior Chris Burch rushed for 333 yards on 35 carries and scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to lead Inchelium to the state Class B-8 title. Burch had TD runs of 65, 40 and 13 yards as the Hornets (12-0) won their second straight B-8 title and fourth overall. Prescott (9-4), making its first playoff appearance since 1978, failed in its bid for its second B-8 crown. Inchelium also won state B-8 titles in 1983 and 1991. Prescott won the B-8 championship in 1975. Sam Erwin, the Tigers’ quarterback, led his team with 182 yards rushing and 120 yards passing.
