Ryan Benzel, a teaching pro at Marysville’s Battle Creek Golf Course, shot a 4-under-par 67 on Tuesday to jump back into contention with a three-day total of 3-under 210 at the PGA Professional National Championship in Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M.
Benzel is tied for 11th and trails leader Mark Sheftic, a teaching pro at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., by five shots heading into today’s final round.
One day after shooting a 3-over 74, Benzel rallied with a round of five birdies and one bogey. The tournament is being contested on two courses, Twin Warriors Golf Course and Santa Ana Golf Club, and Benzel will play his final round at Twin Warriors, where he has rounds of 69 and 67 in this tournament.
The top 20 finishers qualify for the 91st PGA Championship, Aug. 13-16, at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.
