Up to Cypress again today, this time to shoot the ever-entertaining snowboard cross. If you’re not familiar with the event, it goes like this: go as fast as you can, miss the guy who crashes in front of you and wear denim pants. (Okay, that last part isn’t really a trademark of the event, but American Seth Wescott wore denim snowpants on his gold medal run.)
Boarder cross is an interesting sport. In order to win the gold you must compete in four races; placing in the top two of four for the first three races and then winning outright the last race. There are a TON of crashes and a lot of luck involved in making it through to the final race. You can win a race and then crash out in your next one.
Two sets of giant Olympic rings are visible from the bottom of the course, making for some interesting photos. One Canadian crashed just before the final jump and didn’t have enough speed to make it all the way over the take-off ramp.
Yay for giant rings!
