SEATTLE _ When University of Washington junior basketball player Mollie Williams buried a 15-foot, game-winning jump shot to beat Portland State 51-50 on Sunday afternoon, it capped off quite a weekend for Husky women’s sports.
The UW cross country team, which had taken third in the Pac-10 Conference meet two weeks earlier, surprised three top-10 teams to win the NCAA West Regional. The Huskies advanced to the NCAA championships and are looking for their second national title in three years.
On Sunday afternoon, the UW women’s soccer team outlasted second-ranked University of Portland, 2-1, after beating the Pilots 10-9 in a penalty-kick shootout. With the victory, the Huskies advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.
Then Williams capped it off with the game-winning shot with 22 seconds remaining, helping UW earn its first season-opening win in women’s basketball since the 2005-06 season.
