Bliss, Lowe power Spartans past Snohomish

STANWOOD — What’s the secret to molding a fine-tuned victory machine?

For the Stanwood baseball team, the not-so hush-hush approach is to simply not think about it.

The Stanwood Spartans beat the Snohomish Panthers for the second straight night, this time 4-3, in a Western Conference North Division game on Wednesday. Stanwood improved to 4-0 in league, 8-0 overall, and remains atop the league standings.

"Did I expect to be here? I just really don’t know," Stanwood head coach Tony Wolden said.

"I just tell our kids ‘Don’t worry about our record.’ We’re just taking it inning by inning and game by game."

Stanwood defeated Snohomish 11-3 Tuesday and completed a regular-season sweep of the Panthers (3-3, 5-4) with Wednesday’s victory. Wolden is pleased to have performed so well against what he called one of the best Wesco North teams.

"Snohomish is a fundamentally sound, well-coached team," Wolden said. "If I’d have split with them I’d have been happy. They’re a good club."

Stanwood’s offense didn’t pile up runs like it did Tuesday. This time, Bobby Lowe and Michael Bliss combined to inflict most of the damage.

Lowe singled, doubled and tripled, and scored twice.

"He was kind of the guy that had the spark and got it going," Wolden said.

Bliss drove in Lowe in both the second and fourth innings. Overall Bliss was 2-for-2 with three RBI, including a second-inning home run to left field.

Blake Wickstrom was 2-for-2 for Stanwood.

Kevin Rodland was 2-for-4 and pitcher Jake Hammons had two hits and one RBI for Snohomish.
