UPDATED: Dustin Wolf earns CHL Goaltender of the Week

Rather than write an entire new post I figured I would add this news to my Monday entry.

Everett Silvertips rookie goaltender Dustin Wolf was named CHL Goaltender of the Week Tuesday one day after he was feted as the WHL’s goalie of the week:

That might not be Wolf’s most impressive achievment. The netminder’s craziest stat so far is that he is averaging a point per game. Yes, he was credited late with an assist on Patrick Bajkov’s game-winning goal at Portland Sunday, so he now has two assists in two games. He told me he’s never scored a goal from the crease, but it “crossed his mind” at Kamloops on Friday.

I thought there was a pretty good chance of Wolf earning WHL honors, so I wasn’t surprised Monday. Tuesday’s announcement was a bit more surprising, but only because I hadn’t looked to see the numbers put up by the other honorees.

He actually hadn’t heard the news about the CHL award when I spoke to him Tuesday following the annual 3-on-3 Halloween Costume Tournament, so I got to break that news to him. Look for a feature on the youngster prior to Friday’s game against Prince George.

We’d be remiss not to mention the 3-on-3 tournament that features mini-scrimmages between lines/pairs. Taking first place was the line of Sean Richard, Bryce Kindopp and Brandson Hein as the trio finished plus-five on the day. The three overagers finished second a plus-three, while Riley Sutter, Connor Dewar and Jake Christiansen were third at plus-two while dressed as crayons.

Wolf’s first award came Monday as the 16-year-old earned the first of potentially many WHL awards after opening his major junior career with a 3-1 win at Kamloops Friday and a 3-2 win at Portland Sunday. Through two games Wolf has saved 82 of the 85 shots he’s faced for a .965 percentage and also has a 1.50 goals-against average.

He knew last week that he was going to dress for the weekend’s games, but with Carter Hart not yet ready Wolf found himself on the ice for the first time since offseason hip surgery.

Sunday’s game seemed destined for overtime before Patrick Bajkov turned in this game-winning gem with 29 seconds to play:

In other news:

– Could there be an outdoor game at Safeco Field next season? Gregg Drinnan of the Taking Note blog has a source saying so.

– Luke Ormsby of the Seattle Thunderbirds has been reassigned to the Wenatchee Wild of the BCHL. Why is that significant? Because Ormsby is a Monroe native and former Everett Youth Hockey participant where he learned the game alongside good friend and current Silvertips defenseman Wyatte Wylie. Ormsby posted this on Monday:

– Former Silvertips first-round pick Jantzen Leslie has been traded from Saskatoon to Edmonton. The Tips selected Leslie 15th overall in the 2014 bantam draft before trading him to the Blades as part of the deal to acquire Brycen Martin during the 2015-16 season.
