Boys basketball game thread: Lake Stevens vs. Stanwood

Final score: Stanwood 51, Lake Stevens 50

STANWOOD — Eric Chabot made two clutch free throws, Zack Johnson had a big all-around effort and the surging Stanwood Spartans edged the Lake Stevens Vikings 51-50 tonight in a key Western Conference North Division boys basketball game.

Johnson, a junior post, tallied 13 points, 13 rebounds and four assists for Stanwood (6-2 in division, 8-4 overall). Supported by an enthusiastic crowd at the Stanwood High gym, the Spartans held off Lake Stevens (8-2, 11-3), which came into the clash on a nine-game win streak and atop the Wesco North.

Chabot finished with eight points and seven boards for Stanwood, which lost 58-55 Dec. 12 at Lake Stevens High. In that defeat, Stanwood struggled mightily at the free-throw line. This time it was different.

Even though Sean Stickney of Lake Stevens erupted with nine points in the third period, Stanwood increased its lead by one. Stanwood continues to take care of the ball. It will need to keep that up to hold off Lake Stevens the rest of the way.

Halftime score: Stanwood 26, Lake Stevens 22

Stanwood ended the first half on a 10-5 scoring run. Jordan Solvberg capped the spurt by making two free throws with 5.2 seconds to go.

Zack Johnson and Solvberg combined for 15 points for Stanwood, which was just 5-for-16 from the field in the second quarter. Although their shooting percentage was poor, the Spartans didn’t commit a turnover in the second period.

Lake Stevens’ top scorer so far is Shane Kaska (eight points).

With 3:14 to go in the first half, Stanwood has a slim lead. The home crowd is getting into it. They erupted a few minutes ago when Kale Schmidt hit a 3-pointer from the middle and gave the Spartans a 16-14 advantage.

Stanwood is off to a great start in its home gym. Zack Johnson has scored six points in the first 5-plus minutes and Stanwood leads 11-6.

This clash features two of the top teams in the Wesco North. First-place Lake Stevens is 8-1 in division, 11-2 overall. Stanwood, currently in third place, is 5-2, 7-4.

Lake Stevens has been hot. The Vikings are trying for their 10th consecutive victory.
