The short northwest Washington brant hunting season opens this weekend, and Anthon Steen at Holiday Sports in Burlington said it should be a good one.
“It looks like a total population of around 13,000 birds,” Steen said, “which is a pretty good number. Both Padilla and Samish bays appear to be carrying brant, available via the Twin Bridges launch under Highway 20.”
Steen said the storm front which came through earlier this week moved waterfowl in general, and improved what had been a not too good duck hunting picture. There were birds on any open water you could find on the Skagit delta, he said, adding that customers have been giving him fairly positive reports on using the established blinds of the state’s Waterfowl Qualty Hunting Program.
