The Newman family of south Whidbey Island captured two age-division championships at the Everett Elks Hoopshoot, held Jan. 14 at Everett High School.
Rieley Newman won the boys 10-11 division, converting 17 of 25 free throws. His sister Lindsey won the girls 12-13 class. She made 20 of 25 shots.
A third member of the Newman family, Haley, placed second in the girls 8-9 class.
Other division winners were Alley Beck of Mukilteo (8-9 girls, 17-for-25), Zach Houghtaling of Everett (8-9 boys, 18-for-25), Rachel Kitchen of Everett (10-11 girls, 12-for-25) and John Benson of Arlington (12-13 boys, 24-for-25).
The first-place finishers advance to the district competition, scheduled for Saturday at Meridian Park Elementary in Shoreline.
The national finals of the Elks Hoop Shoot are scheduled for April 22-24 in Springfield, Mass.
Bowling
Cascade maintains top spot: The Cascade Bruins held onto first place after competition last week in the High School Mixed Bowling League.
The Bruins finished the week with 288.5 points. Everett was in second place, followed by Lake Stevens.
For the boys, Jordan Plunkett of Cascade rolled the high game of the week (277). His teammate Jason Wilson bowled the top series (662).
On the girls side, Kali Mudie of Lynnwood rolled the high game (189) and series (495).
After 18 matches, the scoring leaders are Plunkett for the boys (209.6), and Grace Cook of Lake Stevens for the girls (185.9).
Basketball
Everett team wins King tournament: The Everett West fifth-grade boys select basketball team won the recent Martin Luther King Classic in Seattle.
Everett West defeated Eastside Catholic 52-42 in the championship game.
Members of the Everett West team included Tyler Arnestad, Tyler Cobb, J.T. Cox, Marcus Daniel, Luke Davis, Zeke Davis, Paris Felder, Spencer McKinnon, Cameron Sphung and Greg Tombelaine. The team was coached by Todd Sphung and Tom Cobb.
