Breaking a school record can ease the sting of missing a top-five finish.
Garrett Brown, an Edmonds-Woodway High School alum, helped a relay team from Seattle University break a school record at the Oregon Invitational Track and Field meet last Saturday at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore.
Brown, Daniel Sullivan, Nicholas Dols and Loyal Allen Jr. ran the men’s 4×400 meter relay in a time of 3 minutes, 19.41 seconds – thirty-six one hundreds of a second faster than the previous school mark set on May 10, 2003.
The Redhawks team finished sixth in the event, which was won by Oregon in 3:10.94.
McGillen advances to Midwest regional meet: University of Tulsa junior Katy McGillen, a South Whidbey High School alum, posted a NCAA Division I regional qualifying mark in the javelin at the KT Woodman Invitational held April 15 at Wichita State University in Kansas.
McGillen, the Conference USA runner-up in the javelin last spring, recorded a throw of 144 feet, 10 inches – well off her own Tulsa record of 159-1 but good enough to advance to the Midwest Regional meet to be held May 24-25 at Drake University in Ames, Iowa.
McGillen was the 2004 state Class 2A champion in the javelin.
Miller breaks own record: University of San Francisco junior Lucy Miller finished fourth in the 3,000-meter women’s steeplechase at the Triton Invitational last Saturday in San Diego.
Miller, a Snohomish High School alum, recorded a time of 11 minutes, 9.23 seconds, breaking her old school mark of 11:19.90, set at the Woody Wilson Invitational on April 23, 2006.
