ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. — Antron Brown, Jim Head, Greg Anderson and Chris Rivas kept the No. 1 qualifying positions Saturday in the Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals, overshadowed by the death of Funny Car driver Scott Kalitta.
Kalitta’s car burst into flames and crashed at the end of track during the final round of qualifying. The NHRA said the 46-year-old Kalitta, the 1994 and 1995 Top Fuel season champion who had 18 career victories, was taken to the Old Bridge division of Raritan Bay Medical Center, where he died a short time later.
Brown led the Top Fuel field with his Friday run of 4.502 seconds at 326.24 mph, while Head topped the Funny Car field at 4.803 and 320.51 mph.
Anderson led the Pro Stock competition at 6.599 and 209.23, and Rivas topped the Pro Stock Motorcycle field at 6.932 and 191.21.
