Bywater blasts 3,200 record

LAKE STEVENS – Joey Bywater, Lake Stevens High School.

If that name wasn’t a household name before, it sure is now.

The junior distance runner set a blistering mark of 9 minutes, 10 seconds in the 3,200-meter run, setting not only a Stadium record, but a Wesco North meet record as well. Bywater shared the old mark of 9:25 with Danny Hayman of Marysville-Pilchuck, who set it in 2003.

Bywater also won the 1,600 on Wednesday, setting a Wesco North record with 4:15. He holds the stadium record of 4:12 set this year.

His efforts helped Lake Stevens win the team title with 188.5 points.

J. Hopkins helped the Everett Seagulls to a second-place finish in the team standings, taking first in both of his events, the 110 and 300 hurdles.

In two of the more exciting events of the night, Derek Sepe of Cascade edged out Ashtin Mott of Lake Stevens in both the 100 and 200 dash. Sepe beat out Mott by .02 seconds to claim first in the 100 dash. In the 200 dash, both Sepe and Mott finished with 22.87 times, but once again it was Sepe getting the victory according to the replay.
