EVERETT — Everett Silvertips defenseman Ryan Murray has been named to the Canadian team that will compete in the U-18 World Championships, Hockey Canada announced Wednesday.
Murray was one of 22 players, including six from the Western Hockey Legaue, who were chosen to compete at the tournament. The tournament takes place April 14-24 in Crimmitschau and Dresden, Germany.
This will be Murray’s third time representing Canada at the U-18 level. He was the youngest player on Canada’s team at last year’s U-18 World Championships, when the Canadians finished a disappointing seventh. He also captained the U-18 team to the gold medal at last summer’s Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. Murray is a candidate to again captain the squad.
Canada is always handicapped at the U-18 world championships because it does not use players who are still participating in the Canadian Hockey League playoffs.
Murray just completed a season for Everett where he had six goals, 40 assists, was a team-best plus-18 in 70 games and was named a second-team WHL Western Conference All-Star. On Tuesday, he was appointed Everett’s captain for the 2011-12 season.
