Silvertip Carter Hart reflects on NHL draft experience

By now you’re probably aware of Carter Hart’s busy weekend.

I was able to get in touch with him Sunday night after he got home to Sherwood Park, Alberta, following his selection of No. 48 overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round of the NHL draft Saturday in Buffalo, N.Y.

“I didn’t really have any words,” Hart said. “I was speechless. I got to hug my parents and my family and hug my billet Parker (Fowlds). I’m glad they were there to support me.”

Hart sold himself a bit short there. His line about being in good shape and the days of “putting the chubby kid in goal” being long gone received plenty of laughs from the commentators and on social media.

After shaking hands with the organization, Hart said, he began the gauntlet of media requests and photo shoots.

Hart spoke with 23 teams at the NHL combine earlier this month including the Flyers. He said he felt like he had a good interview with the franchise and his connection to Philadelphia goaltending coach Brady Robinson helped.

He’s headed out to development camp in July and will likely attend NHL training camp in September.

“Going through it – it hasn’t really sunk in,” he said. “I think it’s sunk in at all yet that I’ve been drafted. I had no words for it.”

A few other things of note: The Tips released their full regular-season schedule Monday. They open the season Friday, Sept. 23 against the newly relocated Vancouver Giants at Langley Events Center, and play host to the Giants the following night in the home opener.

They play a Black Friday home game against Edmonton on Nov. 25. The Tips also have a 2 p.m. game on Martin Luther King Day on Jan. 16, and play against the Thunderbirds in Kent the following night as part of a “Two-fer Tuesday” at ShoWare Center.

Lastly, the CHL Import Draft is scheduled for Tuesday. The Tips released both Yan Khomenko and Dario Winkler, so they will select two new Euros. Everett possesses the No. 40 pick. However, general manager Garry Davidson said at least two teams are expected to pass so the pick will be more like No. 38.
