Cascade clinches district playoff spot

EVERETT – Before the soccer season began, the Cascade boys team was picked to finish fifth in a coaches’ poll in the highly competitive Wesco North.

Last night, the Bruins (10-3-1) clinched a 4A District 1 playoff berth and moved into second place in the division by defeating Monroe 3-0.

“I’m so proud of the boys, we’ve exceeded (even our own) expectations,” said Cascade head coach Dagi Kesim. “But we are still shooting for second place.”

Cascade’s Vlad Voin scored the game’s opening goal in the 29th minute assisted by Tyler Wilkins.

Two second half goals, one by sophomore Reid Jones and a late tally by Mario Gomez, made the score 3-0 and put away a hard-working Monroe (4-8-1) squad.

“Monroe dominated the first 20 minutes … they play a good game,” Kesim noted. “Jones calmed our team down and as our playmaker, (he) controlled the second half.”

Bruin goalkeeper Derek Weigelt recorded his ninth league shutout, a single-season record at Cascade high school.

“Derek is doing a great job in one of the toughest leagues in the state,” Kesim said.

Senior captain Tyler Wilkins also added two assists.
