Cascade earns the right to defend state championship

ANACORTES – The Cascade girls bowling team has reloaded and is ready to defend its state championship.

The Bruins finished with 2,500 total pins to win the District 1 tournament at San Juan Lanes on Tuesday and advance to the state playoffs.

Everett was second with 2,384 pins and also advanced to the state tournament. Jackson took third with 2,282 pins, Ferndale was fourth with 2,126 and Anacortes had 1,874.

The state tournament is familiar territory for Cascade, but this year’s team looks markedly different than last year’s title-winner with just three Bruins from last season on the current roster. And with the state tournament field widened to 16 teams – doubled from last year – the competition will be more intense.

“It’s going to be tougher,” Cascade coach Ron Hicks observed. “We have high hopes, but it will be a real challenge. The girls have really answered the call this year.”

Anastasia Adams – one of those three returning bowlers – set the pace for Cascade at the district tournament, finishing with a 249 game and 603 series, both tournament highs.

Senior co-captains Maddie Rizzuto and Jessica Vanhorn are the other veterans from last season’s title squad. Rizzuto finished with a 176 game and 508 series at district.

Rounding out the Cascade squad – and newcomers to the state tournament – are junior Peggy Wadena, senior Phylicia Isbey and freshmen Sara Elliott and Breanne Mattson.

Second-place Everett was led by Brianna Kinman, who had a 220 game and 567 series, and Andrea Hurley, who rolled a 184 game and 528 series. Joining them at the state tournament will be Jennifer Beck, Shalin Ram, Chrissy Taylor and Sierra Neeley.

“They bowled really well,” Hicks said of the Seagulls. “None of these girls were bowling the last time (Everett) went to state. They’re pretty excited.”

Kristine Alvarez had a 179 game and 512 series for Jackson. Ferndale was led by Margie Scribner, who rolled a 184 game and 500 series.

The state tournament is Feb. 3-4 at Leilani Lanes in Seattle.
