EVERETT – According to Cascade football coach Rollie Wilson, the Bruins’ offense only took what the Marysville-Pilchuck defense would give it Friday night.
If that were the case, than the Bruins should thank the Tomahawks’ defense for giving them countless holes to run through en route to a 49-21 Western Conference North victory at Everett Memorial Stadium.
The win improved Cascade to 3-3 in league and overall. While Marysville-Pilchuck is 2-3 in league and 2-4 overall.
Cascade piled up massive numbers on the ground. Using seven different ballcarriers, the Bruins racked up 385 yards on 33 carries, while also scoring six rushing touchdowns.
“Their defensive line didn’t set up to try and stop our run,” said Wilson. “So we ran it at them a bunch.”
After stopping Marysville-Pilchuck on fourth-and-one on its opening drive, it took the Bruins just three plays to get into the end zone. Capped by a 40-yard pass from quarterback Paul Curtiss to Dan Jackson, Cascade’s opening drive was a sign of things to come.
On their ensuing possession the Tomahawks fumbled the ball back to Cascade. The Bruins then turned their attention to the ground game and found, to their delight, many lanes to run in.
Four rushes by three different ball carriers ended in the second Bruins’ touchdown, which was run in by Tony Snow from the 1-yard line.
The Tomahawks answered with a methodical drive of their own ending in a Nick Powers’ 18-yard touchdown run to make the score 14-6. But, that would be as close as the Tomahawks would get.
To start the second quarter, Cascade drove 74 yards in seven plays, six of which were of the rushing variety, to answer Marysville-Pilchuck’s touchdown.
And after the Tomahawks turned the ball over on downs on their next possession, Cascade used a battering ram named Andy Hughes to score their fourth touchdown in as many possessions in the first half.
Leading 28-12 after halftime Cascade didn’t let up in the second-half. On their first possession of the third quarter, the Bruins’ Andy Fortino burst through a gaping hole on the left side of the line and galloped 45 yards to paydirt.
The Bruins also had touchdown runs of 54 yards and 55 yards by Andrew McGuire and Corey Sizemore respectively in the second half to finish their scoring.
Although their defense had their fair share of struggles, the Marysville-Pilchuck offense showed a lot of heart against a good Cascade defense.
Behind 35-12, the Tomahawks ground out a 17-play, 72-yard drive to score their third touchdown of the night. A consistent Tomahawk running game was led by Powers, who ran for 221 yards on 36 carries.
