Cascade knocks off first-place Snohomish

EVERETT – Needing a victory to keep their chances alive for a Class 4A district birth, the Cascade girls basketball team had a tall task with first-place Snohomish coming to town.

But the Bruins were up to it, defeating Snohomish 46-41 Wednesday night.

With its win and coupled with Monroe’s loss to Marysville-Pilchuck, Cascade moves into sole possession of fourth place. The top four teams in each division of 4A Wesco move on to the tournament.

Cascade used a strong second-quarter performance by center Alyssa Smoke to outscore the Panthers 17-10 in the period. Smoke scored eight of her 18 points in the second quarter.

Smoke’s pivot partner Kristi Auckland added 14 points to lead Cascade, while point guard Michelle Sullivan dished out five assists.

In the second half Cascade kept its lead with a stingy defense led by Smoke and Auckland who contained Snohomish’s inside threats of Anne Bailey and Hali Thompson.
