Cascade rolls over Eagles

EVERETT — Apparently, Cascade’s Julian Willis isn’t superstitious — at least about his jersey number.

The senior fullback switched from No. 1 to No. 23, then carried 14 times for 172 yards and three touchdowns, as it was Cascade who had Arlington’s number Friday night, routing the Eagles 42-6 in the Wesco North contest at Everett Memorial Stadium.

“A lot of teams have been keying (on Cascade running back) Lorne (Bridgford), so Julian has picked up his game and is running with authority,” Cascade coach Jake Huizinga said. “He makes us more balanced.”

The win was the latest in a string of four straight victories and puts the third-place Bruins in position to determine their own playoff future.

“We had to win (tonight), we’ve had to win ever since we lost to Lake Stevens,” Huizinga said. “We told the kids, ‘Every game is a playoff game’…Now our destiny is in our hands, which is exactly where you want it to be.”

The Bruins came into the contest having shut out their last three opponents. And that trend continued, as the Cascade defense came up big early in this one, forcing two turnovers that led to the first two Bruin scores.

On the Eagles’ second posession, Cascade cornerback Dauann Sykes intercepted Jake Parduhn on the Bruins’ 37-yard line. Cascade converted on a fourth down situation to set up their first touchdown. Bridgford carried the ball 40 yards up the sideline and into the end zone, putting Cascade up 6-0.

The first score clearly gave the Bruins momentum. Arlington’s Jerad Barber fumbled on the second play of the drive, and the Bruins recovered on the Arlington 21-yard line. Two plays later, Willis ran the ball 18 yards for a score and a 12-0 lead. Bridgford carried successfully on the two-point conversion to make it 14-0.

The Cascade defense continued to show its dominance as it forced Arlington into a three-and-out on its ensuing posession. The Bruins’ ensuing 50-yard, nine-play drive culminated with a Bridgford 1-yard touchdown run to give the Bruins a 20-0 lead.

“Our defensive staff and players have done a great job,” Huizinga said. “(They are) carrying on the defensive trend we’ve had here (at Cascade).”

The stingy Cascade defense stymied Arlington again on the Eagles’ next posession, forcing another three-and-out. Then Frye engineered a nine-play, 79-yard drive and Willis carried for a 4-yard touchdown run and a 26-0 lead. Morrison carried on the two-point conversion to put the Bruins up by 28 just before halftime.

Things didn’t get any easier for Arlington after the intermission. Cascade received the kickoff and ran two rushing plays before Willis broke free for a 69-yard touchdown run on the third play of the half.

The Bruins later added a 4-yard running touchdown from Frye.

The lone bright spot for Arlington came when the Eagles finally broke Cascade’s shutout streak. Parduhn found Brad McPherson for a 19-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to prevent the Bruins from a school record fourth consecutive shutout.

Bridgford finished with 140 yards on 23 carries and two scores.

Parduhn was 6-for-9 passing for 77 yards and one touchdown, as the Bruins defense held the Eagles to just 106 total offensive yards.

Cascade can’t dwell on this victory for too long. The Bruins face a big test next week as they travel to Oak Harbor to take on the defending state champion and fifth-ranked Wildcats.

“When you play Oak Harbor, it’s about speed,” Huizinga said on a postgame radio interview. “We gotta utilize our speed to get after them.”

Martinez finished with 62 yards rushing on four carries. Ian Houts rushed eight times for 65 yards and two fourth quarter touchdowns. The Wildcats’ offense did not commit any turnovers while the defense earned its third shutout of the year.

One of the Wildcats’ starting running backs. Henry Woods, limped off the field in the third quarter with what is likely a strained medial collateral ligament in his left knee, coach Rick Stubrud said. It’s unlikely he will be able to play at South Whidbey in game that will determine the conference championship next Friday.
