Cascade’s Shaw nets state berth

STANWOOD -Cascade’s Clayton Shaw defeated Jackson’s Richard Oam 6-3, 7-6 in the first singles semifinal match of the District 1 tournament, earning a state tournament berth. Shaw will face the winner of the other semifinal match between Kamiak’s Edwin Lee and Shorewood’s Nomar Mapalo in the final.

In doubles, the finals will pit the North’s No. 1 seed, Daniel Redfern and Zach Tafoya of Stanwood against the Jackson duo of Eugene Song and Hunter Houvener, the South’s No. 3 seed.

The top three singles players and doubles teams will advance to the state tournament in May. The two finalists automatically qualify in addition to the third-place finisher.

Singles semifinals (winners to state)-Shaw (Cascade) def. Oam (Jackson), 6-3, 7-6; Lee (Kamiak) vs. Mapalo (Shorewood).

Doubles semifinals (winners to state)-Redfern-Tafoya (Stanwood) def. Fenning-Donnely (Meadowdale), 6-2, 7-5; Song-Houvener (Jackson) def. Clairmont-Sheldon (Edmonds-Woodway), 6-4, 4-6, 7-6.

Bothell 28, Franklin 8: At Seattle, Bothell quarterback Cody Atkinson was 10-for-16 for 207 yards and two touchdowns passing and Josh Winters intercepted four passes to lead the Cougars to the Kingco 4A victory. Robert Schaefer was one of nine different rushers for Bothell, finishing with 57 yards on nine carries.
