Cascade’s Snel kicks game-winning field goal

EVERETT – In a game dominated by pairs of legs, it was the single right leg of Cascade quarterback/placekicker Dirk Snel that sealed Snohomish’s fate, as Snel booted a 37-yard field goal with three seconds on the clock to give the Bruins a thrilling 31-28 victory over the Panthers in Wesco North action at Everett Memorial Stadium Friday night.

With 2:37 left to play, Snel’s squib kick richocheted off Nate McDonald’s helmet straight into J.P. Oliver’s hands on the Panther 37. Five plays later, the Bruins were on the 20, and Snel became the sure-footed hero.

It was a runner’s feast for most of the game, as Oliver had an unofficial 194 yards on 32 carries, and teammate Travis Warren added 156 yards on 14 carries.

The Panthers were burning up the carpet as well, with quarterback Kevin Rodland registering 133 yards on 11 carries, highlighted by a 60-yard scamper through the Bruin secondary.

Cascade opened the scoring on its opening drive when Oliverfollowed a 36-yard scramble by Warren with a 1-yard TD run.

Snohomish answered right back when a Matt Bonneywell interception led to a 56-yard drive to knot the score at 7-7.

The Bruins took the lead when Oliver broke through the line with a 39-yard TD to open the second quarter.

After Panther Luke Darling’s 8-yard TD, the Panthers took the lead before the half with Rodland’s long dash.

Cascade rumbled down the field to open the second half with an 11-play scoring drive, capped by a 3-yard Snel TD pass to Justin Thompson.

Snohomish wasted no time responding with a beautiful 26-yard Rodland spiral to Nate Van Duine to make it 28-21.

Cascade was by no means through, as another long drive in the fourth quarter, was capped off by a 1-yard Snel quarterback sneak to set up the unlikely kickoff recovery.

The Bruins improved to 3-1 overall, 2-1 in league, while Snohomish, which has now lost three games by a total of five points, dropped to 1-3 overall and in league.
