FEDERAL WAY – It’s just a guess, but Cashmere is probably not one of Sultan girls soccer coach Andrea Fuller’s favorite places right now.
The Cashmere Bulldogs handed Fuller’s Sultan Turks a 3-0 loss in the third-place game of the Washington State 2A state playoffs Saturday at Federal Way Stadium, sending the Turks home with the fourth-place trophy.
Fuller looked on the Turks’ hard-luck tournament appearance philosophically and put a positive spin on the overall season. The losses to Cashmere Saturday and Meridian on Friday marked the first time her team had lost two games in a row all season.
“Yesterday took a lot out of us. We came out flat today,” said Fuller, fighting back tears. “But the season is 14 weeks, not two days. Today is not so nice, but we will get back on the bus and things will get better.”
After an evenly played first half that ended in a scoreless tie, the Cashmere Bulldogs took the lead in the 54th minute as Bulldog senior Michelle Phillips, standing nearly toe-to-toe with Sultan goalkeeper Molly Cramer in the goal mouth, took control of a high bouncing pass from Kacee Tomchik and headed the ball into the net.
Three minutes later, Phillips struck again, this time on a direct kick, giving Cashmere a 2-0 lead. Phillps’ goals were her eighth and ninth of the season. Six of those came on direct kicks.
Cashmere widened the final margin to three goals when freshman Taryn Brandeberry scored her first postseason goal in the 70th minute.
