Gissberg Ponds (Twin Lakes), the two small waters lying adjacent to the west side of I-5 at Smokey Point, have received their first planted rainbow trout of the season, but only the north pond, open to youngsters 14 and under, appears to be producing. Both lakes are open year-around, but adult anglers on the south pond have not been doing well, according to Darrell Kron at Hook Line & Sinker in Smokey Point (360-651-7304).
“We’ve been getting reports of some nice big fish coming out of the north lake,” Kron said. “One customer said he took his grandson over there last week and got two big holdovers of 5-plus pounds — nice fish, good condition, he said.”
Kron said the water is cold and the trout appear to be on the bottom and not moving much, making a standard bait rig the best bet — quarter- to half-ounce slip sinker, 2 to 3 feet of leader, No. 10 egg hook and chartreuse or rainbow Power Bait.
The north lake will get another plant — with some good-sized triploids — prior to the Everett Steelhead and Salmon Club’s Kids’ Fish-In on May 21. The free event runs 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with lots of prizes, loaner tackle available and club experts on hand to help. For more information, call Jim Brauch at 425-745-0444.
