Football player Chris Chandler and figure skater Rosalyn Sumners, former athletes with roots in Snohomish County, are part of the newest class of inductees into the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame.
Chandler, who was raised in Everett, went from Everett High School to the University of Washington and then to a 17-year career in the National Football League. In his career, Chandler passed for 170 touchdowns and more than 28,000 yards, and guided the Atlanta Falcons to the 1999 Super Bowl.
Sumners, who grew up in Edmonds, was a world junior champion in 1980, the U.S. champion in 1982, 1983 and 1984, and a silver medalist at the 1984 Olympic Games.
The others inductees are former UW and NBA basketball player James Edwards, top women’s basketball player Joyce Walker, former Seattle Post-Intelligencer sports editor and columnist John Owen, and legendary racing shell builder George Pocock.
“This is a wonderful class for our hall of fame that started in 1960,” said executive director Marc Blau. “It was selected by a panel of experts, many of them sportswriters and broadcasters, from throughout the state.”
The addition of this year’s hall of fame class will bring the total of inductees to 195. An induction ceremony will be held at Safeco Field prior to a Seattle Mariners game at a date to be determined.
