Chiefs rout Silvertips 8-1

SPOKANE — The Everett Silvertips’ longest road trip of the season finally came to a conclusion Sunday evening, and it seems the Tips ran out of gas at the end.

Everett came limping home following a 8-1 defeat at the hands of the Spokane Chiefs.

It was an inauspicious finish to a difficult road trip for the Tips. Everett, which first boarded the bus on Oct. 22 in Spokane, finished 2-6-0-1 on the nine-game trip, which included a six-game tour of the Western Hockey League’s Central Division. Everett lost its final five, and the Tips were severely outshot throughout the trip. The final shot total Sunday was 55-15 in favor of Spokane.

Mike Aviani had two goals and an assist to lead Spokane (9-4-0-1), which turned it into a laugher with five goals in the third period. Carter Proft, Mitch Holmberg, Jarid Hauptman, Anthony Bardaro and Dominik Uher also found the net for the Chiefs, while Luke Lee-Knight had a quiet night in goal with 14 saves.

Tyler Maxwell scored the lone goal for Everett (4-13-0-3). Kent Simpson stopped 38-of-43 shots in goal for the Tips before being removed. Austin Lotz stopped nine of 12 in relief.

Everett returns home for its next six games, and the Tips don’t board the bus again until December.

The first period was played almost exclusively in Everett’s end, and the Chiefs took a 2-0 lead. Spokane opened the scoring at 7 minutes, 33 seconds when Proft forced a rebound past Simpson after a shot off the rush by Liam Stewart. It was 2-0 at 13:57, Holmberg left alone for a free shot from the circle during a power play.

Everett cut the deficit in half during a five-on-three power play early in the second period, Maxwell scoring on the back door to make it 2-1 at 3:00.

But Spokane continued to carry play and restored its two-goal lead at 18:12. Simpson deflected Marek Kalus’ shot from the boards, and Aviani poked in the rebound to make it 3-1.

Spokane put the game away with three goals in two minutes early in the third, with Hauptman, Bardaro and Aviani scoring in quick succession to turn it into a rout.
