MEXICO CITY — Chivas stood up for the Mexican teams against MLS clubs, beating the Seattle Sounders 3-0 on Wednesday to qualify for the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League.
Chivas prevailed by an aggregate score of 3-1. Chivas lost the first leg 1-0 and, for a moment, it seemed that it would suffer the same fate as two other Mexican clubs, eliminated by MLS teams in the quarterfinals.
Oswaldo Alanis converted a free kick at 49 minutes and Lopez scored what proved to be the match-winner at 55 minutes.
Jesus Godinez added a goal in the 80th minute for Chivas, which is looking to win the CONCACAF championship for the first time in its history.
On Tuesday, the New York Red Bulls beat Tijuana and Toronto did the same against Tigres to qualify for the semifinals.
Chivas reached the CONCACAF semifinals for the first time since 2007, when it beat DC United to advance to the Champions Cup final, a tournament that preceded the current one.
