BRUSSELS — U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters has pulled out of Belgium’s Fed Cup series against Poland next month following her stunning loss at the Australian Open.
Justine Henin already said the Feb. 6-7 best-of-five series comes too early in her return to competitive tennis, leaving Yanina Wickmayer to lead the Belgian team. Henin beat Wickmayer in the fourth round of the Australian Open.
Nadia Petrova defeated Clijsters 6-0, 6-1 in the third round of the Australian Open. The Belgian federation said Clijsters made clear she needs a “fresh period to build up training,” making it “impossible” to compete in the Fed Cup.
