BRUSSELS — Kim Clijsters can’t seem to escape injury bad luck, with Belgian media reporting Sunday that the world’s No. 2 ranked woman could miss the French Open after seriously injuring her ankle while dancing.
Belgian television reported on its website that the 27-year-old, current ch
ampion at the US and Australian Opens, dislocated her ankle while dancing at the wedding of a nephew and could be out for six weeks.
That time frame would put her in serious doubt for Roland Garros, where she has not played since reaching a 2006 semifinal and later retiring from the sport. The French Open begins on May 22.
Clijsters was already resting a wrist and shoulder problem which bothered her during last month’s North American hardcourt swing and was not expected to play for another month.
“After a visit to the doctor, ultrasound and MRI, the diagnosis is as follows: severe dislocation of the right ankle with a strong elongation of both the medial and lateral ligaments and a torn capsule with hematoma at the ankle joint,” Belgian television reported.
