Coach of the year

  • Background: Played high school soccer and basketball in Illinois. Voted among the top 50 soccer players in the state his senior year. Played college basketball at Cornell University. Coached U-8 through U-12 age club soccer for past six years. Served two years as junior varsity girls soccer coach at South Whidbey High School. Last two years has coached the varsity.

  • 2000 season: After finishing the 1999 season at 5-11, South WhIdbey was second in the North Cascades Conference with a record of 6-2. In the Class 2A bi-district playoffs; the Falcons defeated Lakewood in first round and lost to Klahowya in second round, 4-3, but still advanced to the state tournament. At state; South Whidbey defeated Washougal 1-0 in a shootout in the quarterfinals, lost to Naches 2-0 in semifinals and defeated Klahowya 1-0 to capture third place. South Whidbey finished with an overall record of 14-7.

  • Comment: "This is the first year in South Whidbey history that girls soccer finished with a winning record," Arand said. "At the beginning of the season I hoped we could capture one of the top spots in our league, but as the season went on we picked up the momentum and steadily kept improving right into the playoffs."

Next season the Falcons will have the strength of their team returning and their talent pool is getting stronger. The Falcons will have to wait only to find out if they will still qualify to play in the Class 2A North Cascades Conference or will have to be bumped up to the Northwest 3A League because of increased enrollment at the school.
