MOUNT VERNON – A 2-for-22 first-half shooting performance doomed the South Whidbey Falcons in a 35-28 loss to the Lynden Christian Lyncs in a loser-out game of the Class 2A Northwest District girls basketball tournament Tuesday.
In the locker room at halftime, Falcon coach Sam Lee knew something had to change.
“I told them just to shoot,” said Lee. “We were playing good defense. It was our offense that was hurting.”
In the third period, the Falcons came out shooting. Julie Robinson and Hilary Wick opened the quarter by each hitting a 3-point goal, matching the entire Falcon scoring output of the first half. Those baskets were the beginning of an improbable comeback, as South Whidbey scored 13 points while holding the Lyncs to just one.
The Falcons entered the final period behind 20-19. But that was as close as the score would get.
Lynden Christian put an end to the Falcons season by going on a 15-4 run in the final period.
The Falcons were held to just one point in the first quarter, a Wick foul shot nearly six minutes into the game.
Robinson was the highlight for the Falcons in the second quarter, hitting a 3-point shot from outside the top of the key five minutes into the period. Lynden Christian took a 19-6 lead into halftime.
