Year: Sophomore

School: Whitworth University

Sport: Basketball

Hometown: Snohomish (Snohomish High School)

What she did: Averaged 12.5 points per game while hitting seven 3-pointers in a pair of losses to close out the Pirates’ season. G

uthrie led the Pirates (11-14) in scoring (11.9 ppg) and 3-pointers (72) this season.

What’s next: While the Whitworth women’s basketball season is over, Guthrie will begin practicing for the golf season next week.

The two-minute drill

Before we get started, I just have to ask something. I’m fascinated with the name of one of your teammates. Don’t you have a teammate named …

Taylor Taylor? We do.

That’s the one. How’d she get that name?

She’s married to Michael Taylor, who transferred here (from Montana) and is on the men’s basketball team (and leading the Pirates in scoring). Her name was Taylor LaMoreaux.

So her name’s Taylor Taylor. Does she have any nicknames, or do you just call her Taylor?

We just call her Tay-Tay.

So if you met a guy who was named, say, Chad Emily, would that be a deal-breaker?

(Laughs) No, probably not. It would be weird, though.

Anyway, you recently wrapped up a basketball season in which you led the team in scoring and 3-point shooting. Did this season meet your expectations?

Well, I was hoping we’d go further. We started off the year pretty strong, but I was hoping we’d end up going further. I’m excited, though, because we’re really young.

Define ‘really young.’

We have seven freshmen, four sophomores, two juniors and no seniors. We graduated six seniors from last year’s team.

That is young. Meanwhile, your men’s team spent part of the season ranked No. 1 in the country. Are they the big men on campus these days?

Pretty much, yeah. Everyone’s excited. They’re cool about it, though.

Even Michael Taylor?

Yeah, he’s pretty chill.

I assume you’re all friends with the men’s basketball players?

Yeah, we all hang out.

So maybe some of that success will rub off on your team next year?

That’d be great. It would be great if we could get some of their size. (Laughs) They’re a real enthusiastic team, and they work real hard. So that’s something we can take from them.

Speaking of other teams, you’re also a member of the Whitworth golf team. So which sport do you prefer?

That’s the hardest question to answer because they’re so different. Golf is relaxing, and I love it. Basketball is so competitive, and I love the game atmosphere and the excitement. So I’d say basketball has a little edge right now. But when golf starts, I’ll be like, ‘Oh, I love golf.’

When does golf start?

Next week.

Has there ever been an overlap?

Last year, when we made the playoffs. I missed the first week of golf practice.

Not even Michael Jordan or Charles Barkley has been able to master both. So how’ve you been able to do it?

I can’t imagine not playing one of them. I grew up playing them both, and they’ve both been a big part of my life. I have God-given talent, so why waste one of them and not play both?

You even had a hole in one once, right?

I did, yes. Actually, I had two. I had one last year in practice. That was fun; it was with my 7-iron. And a couple of summers ago, I was playing an AJGA tournament, and I teed off with a 4-hybrid, and it went in.

So how did you react to that one? Did you see it go in?

I couldn’t see the hole. I wear glasses, but not when I play golf. So honestly, I couldn’t even see the hole. My dad was there, and he started whistling and getting excited. I was like, ‘What’s going on?’

I must admit, the reason I knew about the hole-in-one was because I stumbled onto the website emilyguthrie.com this week. So how did you get your own website?

(Laughs) That’s my dad’s working. It’s for family. They all live in Texas. We’re the only ones who live out here, so he wanted to give them something where they could track what’s going on.

Are you and Jon Brockman the only athletes from Snohomish with your own websites?

I don’t know. Probably. (Laughs)

Well, if you and Chad Emily ever do meet and hit it off, will you have to change the website to emilyemily.com?

Yeah. (Laughs) Definitely.
