No. 1 North Carolia 98, Oregon 69
LAHAINA, Hawaii — Tyler Hansbrough, who missed three weeks of practice and three games with a leg injury, had 16 points to lead the Tar Heels (5-0) to a victory over the Ducks (3-2) in the semifinals of the EA Sports Maui Invitational. North Carolina plays No. 8 Notre Dame tonight in the championship game.
No. 4 Pittsburgh 74, Belmont 60
PITTSBURGH — Sam Young scored 33 points despite not getting his first basket until more than 11 minutes into the game and the Panthers’ (5-0) tight defense shut down the Bruins’ (1-2) outside shooting. The Panthers won despite being without sophomore center DeJuan Blair due to right knee inflammation. Blair, averaging 17.5 points, developed the problem after having 27 points and 18 rebounds during an 86-60 win over Division II Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday — Pitt’s second game in less than 24 hours.
No. 8 Notre Dame 81, No. 6 Texas 80
LAHAINA, Hawaii — Luke Harangody had 29 points and 13 rebounds and the Fighting Irish (4-0) hung on to beat the Longhorns (3-1) in the semifinals of the EA Sports Maui invitational. Harangody, the Big East player of the year last season as a sophomore, was his usual force inside in a game that saw both teams combine for 49 3-point attempts. Notre Dame won that battle as well, hitting 11 from beyond the arc while the Longhorns made eight.
No. 15 Marquette 85, Texas Southern 68
MILWAUKEE — Jerel McNeal scored 20 points and Lazar Haywood added 18 to lead the Golden Eagles (4-0) over the Tigers (0-4). Marquette failed to score 100 points for the first time in three games as it struggled at times in the first half against Texas Southern.
No. 20 Villanova 71, Monmouth 48
VILLANOVA, Pa. — Dante Cunningham scored 19 points, Corey Stokes added 18 and the Wildcats (4-0) extended its season-opening winning streak to four games by beating the Night Hawks (0-5). Villanova was without junior center Casiem Drummond, who was suspended for one game for disciplinary reasons. Villanova coach Jay Wright described the infraction as a minor disciplinary issue.
Syracuse 89, No. 22 Kansas 81
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jonny Flynn had 25 points and hit a 3-pointer with 6.4 seconds to play in regulation and the Orange (4-0) knocked off the Jayhawks (3-1) in overtime in the CBE Classic championship game. Syracuse trailed by 13 early in the second half, then rallied behind hot shooting and a pressure defense to set up Flynn’s shot at the end of regulation. The Orange shot 14-for-24 in the second half and dominated overtime, hitting five of eight shots to pull away early.
No. 24 Davidson 78, Loyola College (Md.) 48
DAVIDSON, N.C. — In a bizarre game that saw Stephen Curry, the nation’s leading scorer go scoreless and attempt only three shots because of constant double teams, the Wildcats (5-1) still overwhelmed the Greyhounds (2-4) in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off. Curry came in averaging 35 points a game, but got into early foul trouble and then seemed more than happy to defer to his teammates. With coach Jimmy Patsos deciding to drape Curry with two defenders nearly the entire game, Curry often stood in the corner and let his teammate dominate in a 4-on-3 game.
