Ex-Husker headed to Oregon
EUGENE, Ore. — After two years at Northern Iowa, former Nebraska quarterback Scott Frost is returning to the Pacific-10 Conference as wide receivers coach at the University of Oregon. Frost, 34, was the starting quarterback at Nebraska in 1996 and 1997. The Wood River, Neb., native joined the Huskers after transferring from Stanford, where he had been recruited by coaching legend Bill Walsh.
Miami hires new offensive coordinator
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Mark Whipple, who helped Ben Roethlisberger win his first Super Bowl and coached Massachusetts to a Division I-AA national championship in 1998, was hired Tuesday as Miami’s new offensive coordinator. Whipple, 51, most recently was an offensive assistant coach with the Philadelphia Eagles, who were in this year’s NFC championship game.
Boston College assistant quits
BOSTON — Don Yanowsky has resigned as Boston College’s tight ends and special teams coach. Yanowsky held that position the past two seasons under coach Jeff Jagodzinski, who was fired after serving two seasons of his five-year contract. Yanowsky is the third coach to leave the staff since former defensive coordinator Frank Spaziani was hired as Jagodzinski’s successor.
Hampton changes coaches
HAMPTON, Va. — Hampton University has fired football coach Jerry Holmes and promoted defensive coordinator Donovan Rose to replace him. The Pirates finished the 2008 season 6-5, but lost four of their final five games.
