College Football | Pacific-10 Conference

Maryland 35, No. 23 Cal: At College Park, Md., the unheralded Terrapins (2-1) scored touchdowns on their first three possessions en route to a stunning upset of the Golden Bears (2-1), who didn’t reach the end zone until just 6:55 remained in the game.

“We weren’t ready to start the game,” said Cal quarterback Kevin Riley, who made up for his team’s ineffective running attack by going 33-for-58 for 423 yards and three scores. The 58 passes were a school record.

Coming off a 10-point loss to unheralded Middle Tennessee State, the Terrapins were given little chance against a California juggernaut that totaled 104 points in disposing of Michigan State and Pac-10 foe Washington State. But, unlike the Golden Bears, Maryland was ready at the outset. The Terrapins put Cal in an immediate hole, and the deficit proved too much to overcome.

Da’Rel Scott ran for 87 yards and two TDs before leaving with a shoulder injury, Turner threw for scores and the Terps used a relentless defense to harass the Golden Bears from the start.

The Terrapins led 21-3 early in the second quarter, 21-6 at halftime and 28-6 after three quarters. California scored three touchdowns in the final seven minutes, but it was too late.

TCU 31, Stanford 14: At Fort Worth, Texas, Ryan Christian scored the go-ahead TD and Steven Coleman made a key interception to help the Horned Frogs (3-0) beat the Cardinal (1-2) in a game moved up six hours because of Hurricane Ike. Christian, who rushed for 82 yards on 19 carries, gave TCU the lead for good on a 1-yard scoring run with six minutes to play in the third. Stanford appeared to tie the score early in the fourth on Doug Baldwin’s 49-yard punt return for a touchdown. Officials reviewed the play and determined Baldwin stepped out of bounds at the TCU 13. Three plays later, Coleman intercepted a pass in the end zone to thwart Stanford’s comeback attempt.

UNLV 23, No. 15 Arizona St. 20 (OT): At Tempe, Ariz., Malo Taumua blocked a field goal to lift the Runnin’ Rebels to a stunning upset of the Sun Devils. Taumua’s block of a 35-yard field goal attempt by Thomas Weber came after Kyle Watson kicked a 20-yard field goal on the Rebels’ overtime possession.

New Mexico 36, Arizona 28: At Albuquerque, N.M., Rodney Ferguson ran for 158 yards and two TDs and freshman James Aho tied a school record with five field goals to help the Lobos (1-2) beat the mistake-prone Wildcats (2-1) for the second straight year.

Oregon St. 45, Hawaii 7: At Corvallis, Ore., Jacquizz Rodgers ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns as the Beavers (1-2) beat the Warriors (1-2).
