Some of the top women amateur golfers in the country will converge at Auburn’s Washington National Golf Club next week for the 2002 NCAA Division I Championship.

A field of 24 teams, including the University of Washington, and six at-large individuals will comprise a field of 126 competitors for the event, which begins Tuesday and continues through Friday.

Among the top team contenders are Central Regional champion Tulsa, East Regional champion Duke, and UCLA and Pepperdine, which tied for the West Regional championship.

Washington, which finished sixth at the West Regional, is led by senior All-American Kelli Kamimura of Burlington, who finished 29th at last year’s NCAA Championship and helped the Huskies to a 16th-place finish.

“Being able to play in the NCAA Championship on our home course is a tremendous accomplishment,” said UW coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “It is really special because four of our five players are from the state of Washington. That is something special for Northwest golf.”

Also in the field is Arizona State’s Jimin Kang of Edmonds, a graduate of King’s High School who was the Pacific-10 Conference champion this season.

All-session tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students (high school and younger), while single-session tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students. Tickets can be purchased in advance online at the UW Web site (www.gohuskies.com) or at the entrance to Washington National on each day of the tournament. For more ticket information, call 206-543-4895.

Starting times begin at 8 a.m. each day.

Events on tap at Burlington’s Avalon: Avalon Golf Club in Burlington has several upcoming events of note.

First is the June 8 Couples Twilight competition, which features an Irish theme. For a $75 entry fee per couple, there is a nine-hole tournament (alternate shot format), dinner, drinks, prizes and live music by “Maggies Fury.”

The next day is the Buick Scramble with separate competitions for men and women. Teams will consist of four golfers in a scramble format. The winning teams will advance to the sectional championship, which will also be held at Avalon. The sectional winners advance to the nationals at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla. All competitors must have USGA or RCGA handicaps and have posted at least 10 scores in the last 12 months. The cost for non-members at Avalon is $85.

Finally, the third Ladies Clinic/Luncheon Series of the season will be at 11 a.m. on June 18. The focus of the session will be “From the Fairway.”

For more information or to sign up for these events, call the course at 360-757-1900 or 1-800-624-0202.
