Community: Clark bids for first Olympics

Brady Clark of Lynnwood, who captained a team to the 2013 United States national curling championship, will be bidding for his first Olympic appearance when the U.S. Olympic Trials begin Sunday in Fargo, N.D.

Clark, the USA Curling Male Athlete of the Year for 2013, will be the skip of a team that includes Sean Beighton, Darren Lehto and Philip Tilker, all of Seattle, and Greg Persinger of Anchorage.

This will be Clark’s third appearance at the Olympic Trials. His team finished third in 2006 and sixth in 2010.

The Trials will include five men’s teams and four women’s teams, and will have a double round-robin format, with the top two teams in both competitions advancing to a best-of-three playoff. The two winning teams will be nominated for approval by the U.S. Olympic Committee to represent the country at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

The top U.S. men’s team would still need to earn its Olympic berth at a pre-Olympic qualifying event in December.

Martial artist strikes gold

Nine-year-old Ryan Sanchez of Everett won two gold medals at the West Coast Open International Martial Arts Championships, Oct. 26-27, at the Tacoma Convention Center. He placed first in kata (forms) and in kumite (sparring) in the boys advanced division.

Also medaling was 11-year-old Kalin O’Neal, also of Everett. She received a third-place bronze medal in kata in the girls novice division.

Both Sanchez and O’Neal represent the Pacific Karate Organization of Everett, with head instructor Michael Ferguson.

Red Raiders win finale

The Everett Red Raiders wrapped up their 2013 football season on Saturday night with a 39-19 victory over the Kitsap Warhawks at Silverdale Stadium.

The Red Raiders, a team comprised mostly of students from Everett Community College, overcame an 11-0 first-quarter deficit to improve their season record to 8-1, a mark that includes a forfeit win after an earlier loss to Arizona Western, which used ineligible players. Everett won its third straight Northwest Junior College Football League championship.

Against Kitsap, Everett’s Lavonte Hatcher rushed 24 times for 109 yards and two touchdowns, Niko Llera added 72 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns, Jermaine Jackson had three receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown, and John Odion had six catches for 91 yards and a TD. Defensively, Corwin Perkins had 11 tackles, including two for losses, and David Monell had 10 tackles, four for losses. Steven Allen Jr. had three interceptions.
