Junior ice dancers Joylyn Yang of Mukilteo and Jean-Luc Baker of Edmonds, both students at Mukilteo’s Kamiak High School, are headed to the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships, which begin Saturday and run through Jan. 30 in Greensboro, N.C.
The 15-year-old Yang and Baker, 17, qua
lified for nationals by placing first in the junior ice dance section of the Pacific Coast Sectional Championships last November in Los Angeles. Competing as novices a year ago, they placed third at nationals.
The couple, who train at the Olympicview Arena in Mountlake Terrace and the Comcast Arena in Everett, recently participated in international events in Karuizawa, Japan, and Ostrava, Czech Republic.
Curlers to nationals
Team Larway, made up of Jason and Joel Larway of Lynnwood, Sean Beighton of Edmonds and Colin Huffman of Seattle, qualified for the 2011 U.S. National Curling Championships by winning a men’s qualifying round on Jan. 8 in Bismarck N.D.
Team Larway won the decisive match 8-4 over a team from Langdon, N.D.
Team Larway, which trains at the Granite Curling Club in Seattle, will be one of 10 men’s teams competing in the national championships Feb. 12-19 in Fargo, N.D.
