Local ice dancers Joylyn Yang, 13, from Mukilteo, and Jean-Luc Baker, 16, from Edmonds, placed first in the Novice Ice Dance section at the recent Pacific Coast Sectional Championships in Jackson Hole, Wyo.
Yang and Baker, the 2007 U.S. National Juvenile (under 16) champions and 2008 U.S. National Intermediate (under 18) champions, advance to the U.S. National Championships scheduled for January in Spokane. They are the only dance team from Washington to qualify for the championships.
In August, the pair placed first in the B.C. Development Invitational International in Burnaby, B.C. They were the only American team at the Novice level, beating seven Canadian teams.
Yang is a student at Harbor Pointe Middle School, and Baker attends Kamiak High School.
All-conference honors
* Volleyball player Micaela Parker of Marysville has been named to the 2009 All-Dakota Athletic Conference first team.
Parker, a senior outside hitter, plays for Dickinson State University in Dickinson, N.D. Parker, one of the Blue Hawks’ team captains, finished the season with 259 kills (an average of 2.73 per game), 98 blocks and a .309 hitting percentage.
* Sophomore volleyball player Kelsey Brennan, a graduate of Monroe High School, earned first-team honors on the 2009 All-Western Athletic Conference squad announced last week.
Brennan is a middle hitter for New Mexico State University. She finished fourth in the WAC this season with a .332 hitting percentage.
