The Everett Rowing Association won one race and qualified 27 rowers for next month’s national championships at the USRowing Northwest Junior Regional Championships held Friday through Sunday at Vancouver Lake in Vancouver.
Placing first was Everett’s varsity lightweight men’s eight, which finished two seconds ahead of the Sammamish Rowing Association and six seconds in front of the Green Lake Crew to earn its place at the USRowing Youth National Championships, June 8-10 at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
The men’s lightweight eight included coxswain Amber Cary (Archbishop Murphy High School), Ryan Foster (Arlington), Jonah Srb (Lynnwood), Logan Tennis (Kamiak), Conrad Forde (Archbishop Murphy), Dan Olson (Everett), Keith van der Meulen (Kamiak), Grayson Helms (Snohomish) and Isaac Linder (Everett).
Other Everett boats qualifying for nationals were the varsity men’s eight, the varsity women’s four and the varsity women’s pair. All placed second.
The men’s varsity eight boat was coxswain Charles Forrest (Everett Community College), Beau Skalley (Archbishop Murphy), Alex Walczak (Archbishop Murphy), Phillip Walczak (Archbishop Murphy), Sam Helms (Snohomish), Alex Engel (Snohomish), Chris Archer (Anacortes), Eric Engel (Snohomish) and Cole Borseth (Archbishop Murphy).
The women’s varsity four included coxswain Delaney Goetz (Everett), Hannah Aikman (Lake Stevens), Emily Wayland (Stanwood), Ashley Brown (Kamiak) and Missy Freutel (Kamiak).
The women’s pair was Hailey Hedlund (Kamiak) and Holly Hudson (Glacier Peak).
“Overall our team brought home nine trophies and 13 medals,” ERA director Pasha Spencer said. “It’s great to continually have a successful team because of the dedication and commitment of the rowers.”
Everett’s men’s novice eight also earned a gold medal, but does not advance to nationals.
Lacrosse
• Austin Tippett scored a season-high seven goals to lead Snohomish to a 12-6 win over Three Rivers on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Washington Lacrosse Boys Division II State Championships.
Devin Remlinger, Harrison Wartes, Miles Russon, Gabe Girgus and Joshua Pedersen also scored for Snohomish.
Snohomish plays Nathan Hale at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Glacier Peak High School in a semifinal contest.
• Three players from the Snohomish Lacrosse Club were named last week to the 2012 Washington Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association All-State Team.
The players honored were attackman Stephanie Lamphere (Snohomish High School). midfielder Hanna Dalrymple (Glacier Peak) and defenseman Mahea Wong (Archbishop Murphy).
Also named to the team was midfielder Kaylee Best of Snohomish. Best plays for Lakeside High School in Seattle.
• Midfielder Alex Okemah and goalie Nicholas Gregory were named to the 2012 Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Division I All-State second team. Both played for the Mukilteo Lacrosse Club. Okemah, a senior, and Gregory, a junior, are students at Kamiak High School.
Softball
Monroe High School graduate Jordan Birch helped the Illinois State softball team win its first Missouri Valley Conference title in 11 years and advance to the NCAA tournament.
Birch, a senior pitcher, posted a 2-0 record and was named the MVP at the conference championships.
In the NCAA tournament, she threw a pair of shutouts in the Columbia Regional, but the Redbirds were eliminated with a 2-2 record. They lost the championship game to ninth-ranked Missouri, 2-1.
For the season, Birch posted a 25-14 record with 13 shutouts and a 1.59 earned-run average. She finished her career ranked second on the Redbirds’ all-time strikeout list (641) and third in wins (67) and shutouts (22).
Baseball
Cascade High School graduate David Amberson was a unanimous first-team pick for the 2012 All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference Baseball squad. Amberson, a junior at Western Oregon University, hit .300 this season, with five home runs and 31 runs batted in.
Brandon Wang, a senior from Mill Creek, was named to the All-GNAC second team as a second baseman. Wang plays for Central Washington University. He hit .350 with three home runs and 19 RBI.
